“It is a life-altering day when the doctors tell you that you have breast cancer,” stated Laure Kosey, Executive Director of the Oak Brook Park District.

Ten years ago, on August 31, Laure was informed that she was diagnosed with cancer, just months after she started at the park district.

At only 42 years old, Laure used this life-changing news to inspire and create a positive community of support through the Pink 5k.

Evergreen Bank Group

Oak Brook Park District’s “the Pink 5k event means community for a cause,” shared Renee Montgomery with Evergreen Bank Group. “I love the Pink 5k because it gives the community a great reason to gather and enjoy each other, while helping people we don’t know (yet) by raising funds for breast cancer research.”

Unfortunately, it is all too common for someone – yourself, a family member, friend or neighbor – to be impacted by cancer. Allison “Buzzy” Renaud and Julie Brandon, participants of the Pink 5k, are all too familiar with the impacts of this disease.

“Who doesn’t know someone that has been impacted by cancer?” Allison shared. “I attend the Pink 5k because it means family. It’s an opportunity for all of us to come together to support fighters, survivors and in honor of those that lost the fight.”

Team Proviso

Vince Stubstad is the Wellness and Driver Education Teacher, Behind the Wheel Coordinator, Head Golf Coach, and Intramural Coordinator at Proviso Mathematics & Science Academy. That in itself should keep Vince pretty busy. However, he does not stop making an impact there. He goes inside and outside of Proviso’s walls to make a difference for his students and beyond.

Each year, Vince (or Mr. Stubs as his students call him) organizes the school, their families, and the entire faculty to participate in Oak Brook Park District’s Pink 5k as part of Team Proviso.

Team Karen

Strung across her living room wall were seven Pink 5k team t-shirts. One for each year Karen Coffinbargar has participated in this event. These t-shirts, however, represent much more than just years for Karen. To her, this event means survival.

“My mom had cancer and is a survivor. I received a mammogram early, and we found a lump. I sign up each year for the Pink 5k because it’s needed. We need to find a cure. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through this,” Karen shared.

Pink 5k Stories

To further celebrate the Pink 5k 10th Anniversary, the Oak Brook Park District will be publishing a series of stories from its’ participants beginning on September 28, 2020. These stories can be found right here on the Pink 5k Special event page and the Oak Brook Park District Facebook page. See below for our weekly stories!
