The Salt Creek Greenway Trail is officially open, restoring a popular regional connection for walkers, runners, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts throughout Oak Brook and surrounding communities.
The trail's reopening follows several years of construction-related closures associated with the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Reconstruction and Widening Project. The reopened section restores access to the continuous Salt Creek Greenway Trail, a nearly 25-mile multi-county trail system stretching from Elk Grove Village to Brookfield, as well as the Salt Creek Waterway which passes under I-294.
In Oak Brook, the trail provides access to the Oak Brook Park District's Dorothy and Sam Dean Nature Sanctuary, a 40-acre natural area featuring oak savanna, wetlands, prairie, and pond habitats as well as an apiary that supports pollinator conservation and environmental education. The reopened trail connection gives residents and visitors the opportunity to experience this unique natural resource while enjoying outdoor recreation and access to the larger regional trail network.
The Oak Brook Park District encourages trail users to enjoy the path responsibly by sharing the trail, staying alert, and helping keep the trail clean and welcoming for everyone.
