Oak Brook, IL — After several years of evaluating the feasibility of rooftop solar energy at the Family Recreation Center, the Oak Brook Park District Board of Commissioners has voted not to move forward with a proposed long-term solar power agreement.
Following the completion of the third phase of roof replacement at the Family Recreation Center in 2024, the Park District began exploring opportunities to reduce operating costs and enhance sustainability through renewable energy. Earlier this year, the District issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a solar photovoltaic (PV) system and received submissions for a potential Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
After reviewing the proposals, the District entered discussions with FFP Origination, LLC (ForeFront Power) regarding a 20-year solar lease option designed to offset electricity usage at the Family Recreation Center. Because the proposed PPA contract term is 20 years, the Illinois Park District Code requires a two-thirds majority vote—four out of five commissioners—for approval.
At the regular Board Meeting on Monday, October 20, the motion to approve the agreement received three votes in favor and two opposed, falling short of the required threshold. As a result, the proposal was not approved.
The Park District remains committed to exploring energy efficiency and cost-saving initiatives that support responsible financial stewardship and long-term sustainability for the Oak Brook community.
