Oak Brook, IL — The Oak Brook Park District is gearing up for one of its most anticipated youth events of the summer, Tom’s Try-Athlon, a spirited triathlon-style challenge that brings together swimming, biking, and running in a fun and supportive environment for young athletes ages 6 to 14.
Set for Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Oak Brook Park District, the event celebrates effort, perseverance, and community spirit, offering kids of all skill levels a chance to experience the excitement of a multi-sport challenge in a safe and encouraging setting.
Far more than a race, Tom’s Try-Athlon has become a meaningful tradition for many families. Each year, participants arrive with determination, personal goals, and stories that reflect the heart of youth sports. One moment from last year continues to resonate with staff. A young participant was so inspired that they learned how to ride a bike specifically to participate in the event and went on to complete the entire course, demonstrating how encouragement and opportunity can unlock confidence and determination in a child.
Tom’s Try-Athlon features three age divisions, with race distances tailored appropriately for each group. Participants will begin their race inside Swim Central, the Park District’s indoor pool facility, before continuing onto the bike and run portions of the course through scenic Central Park.
Registration is now open, with pricing tiers available through early June. The event typically fills quickly, as families return year after year to be part of a tradition that blends healthy competition with lasting memories.
The event is made possible through the generous support of the Tom Truedson family, longtime supporters of the Oak Brook community and the Park District. The Truedson family has a deep history of involvement in local recreation and civic life, including longstanding service and advocacy for parks, open space, and youth programming that enriches the community. Their continued support of Tom’s Try-Athlon helps ensure the event remains accessible, meaningful, and memorable for every participant.
Check in and packet pick up begins early on race day, with the event starting promptly at 8:00 a.m.
Tom’s Try-Athlon has become more than a race day tradition. It is a celebration of effort, courage, and the joy of trying something new.
